Unhealthy habits like not getting enough sleep or smoking can indeed accelerate your skin’s aging process. But even if you don’t practice these unhealthy lifestyles, you can still put your body at risk of premature aging by eating foods that make you age faster.
There’s truth behind the popular adage, “You are what you eat.” When you eat foods that accelerate aging, you will surely age faster despite having a younger age. Experts are now trying to tell us that our chronological age no longer determines our aging process. Instead, it’s the food we eat that gives the best command whether we stay youthful and vibrant or age prematurely.
While we can’t prevent our bodies from aging, we can delay the process by avoiding the foods that speed up aging. As much as possible, stay away from these following foods:
1. Salty foods
Foods that have excessive salts such as cheese, pizza, crackers, cereals, and other salty foods are bad news for your body. Aside from the risks of developing certain illnesses associated with too much salt, salty foods can also cause premature aging. Salt encourages the body to retain water in some body parts, which gives you that puffy look. Salt also causes the skin cells to shrink, resulting in dehydration. When the skin does not have enough water, it can wrinkle and age faster.
2. Sweetened foods
As we have always known, sugary foods are the main culprit for diabetes. But aside from this serious health issue, sweet foods can also speed up aging.
The excess sugar tends to combine with protein, which can be bad for the skin. This combination will create a process that affects collagen, the substance responsible for skin elasticity. When the skin isn’t elastic, it can easily cause wrinkles.
Sugar is also not good for the teeth. It invites bacteria that can cause discoloration and tooth decay, the things that are also linked with aging.
3. Red meat
Eating more red meat and less of fruits and vegetables can hasten the body’s biological aging. Red meats are fatty and could generate free radicals, which can cause abnormal cell functioning.
According to scientists, overconsumption of red meat can increase the serum phosphate in the body. And when it’s combined with a lack of balanced diet, chances are you’ll add more miles on the clock. You will age more than your actual age. Eating too much red meat has also been linked to reduced kidney function and chronic kidney disease while high phosphate levels are associated with higher mortality risk and premature vascular aging.
4. Processed meats
Processed meats are also harmful to the skin. This food group includes hot dogs, bacon, and sausage to name a few. Processed foods contain higher levels of sodium, saturated fats, and sulfite, which can weaken collagen, cause inflammation and skin dehydration.
5. Trans fats foods
Trans fats are found in deep-fried foods, margarine, cake frosting, as well as junk foods. Margarine, particularly, contains polyunsaturated fats, which can cause inflammation and cell mutation associated with other health issues.
Trans fats can dehydrate you and cause the skin to wrinkle fast. Trans fats constrict blood vessels, which weaken blood flow to the skin and cause premature aging and wrinkles. They also make skin vulnerable to UV rays. Chronic UV ray exposure can lead to degenerative skin cell changes, fibrous tissue, and blood vessels.
6. Refined carbohydrates
Foods rich in refined carbohydrates include white pasta, white rice, white flour, soda, pastries, snacks, pasta, and cereals. Stay away from these foods if you don’t want to speed up your skin’s aging process.
When refined carbs mix with protein, they can form into AGEs or advanced glycation end products. AGEs can affect the aging process. A buildup of AGEs in the connective tissue can make skin cells stiff and less elastic.
7. Dairy products
Because different people have different reactions to food, some people can tolerate dairy products while others are not. Other people even revealed that their skin condition improved after eliminating dairy products from their diet.
But science says dropping dairy can possibly help you maintain your youthful look. Dairy can cause inflammation in other people. Inflammation can cause oxidative stress, which is a major culprit for premature aging. Dairy can also strip your skin’s ability to protect yourself from the sun’s harmful UV rays.
Alcohol can speed up your body’s biological age for a lot of reasons. Of course, you have to be old enough to drink alcohol, otherwise, that would be illegal. As you get older, your body has less water. And when you drink alcohol, more water will get out of your system. Ever notice the frequent bathroom trips to pee? This alone can lead your body to dehydrate. Once your body is dehydrated, your skin will dry up.
Alcohol can also affect the kidney and liver functions. One of the liver’s most important functions is to eliminate harmful toxins from the body. When the liver is damaged, a toxic buildup is likely to occur, which can lead to skin issues like acne and wrinkles.
Too much alcohol can also harm your brain. It can shrink brain cells, leading to dementia, poor concentration, and even behavioral issues. Your immune system will also tend to get out of whack when there’s too much alcohol in your body, leading it to attack healthy body tissues.
Drinking before sleeping is another habit that can add more years to your chronological age. Alcohol can disrupt your sleep. Prolonged sleepless nights aren’t good for the skin, causing it to wrinkle prematurely.
9. Caffeinated beverages
Caffeine isn’t good for your sleep. This is why it’s not advisable to drink either tea or coffee right before bedtime. Doing so will result in disrupted sleep, which can lead to lots of health issues as well as premature aging.
Caffeine is also a diuretic that can make you excrete more water and deplete your body of fluids. Skin dehydration can make the skin dull, dry, and aged.
